Introduction

As 2016 draws to a close, I’ve been thinking back over thelast 12 months. It’s been an eventful year for TEWV (and forme!). It was a privilege to take over from Martin Barkley aschief executive of one of the best performing and wellrespected mental health and learning disability trusts in thecountry.

Research shows that people with mental ill health or a learningdisability have higher rates of physical illness and reduced lifeexpectancy. This is often associated with preventable physicalconditions.

An insight into is a regular feature within our Trust magazine, featuring a different member of staff each issue. The Council of Governors is always keen to hear from members.

The Trust and organisations from voluntary and third sectors have been very busy over the last few months spreading the word about what information and support is available for mental health and learning disabilities.

Our staff are our greatest asset. Over the past few months we have concentrated our efforts on recruiting registered mental health and learning disability nurses, committing to offering all successful candidates a permanent position at the Trust.

Our staff flu vaccination campaign started in October and we’re doing all we can to protect our patients, collegues and services from this serious virus.

Almost 300 health professionals went to TEWV’s annual NursingConference, held at Ramside Hall, Durham in September.

Mental ill health is more common than you might imagine with one in four people experiencing some form of mental health illness each year.

People experiencing low mood in Durham and Teesside could benefit from a pilot study seeing community pharmacies deliver psychological support.

Over 150 service users, carers and professionals came together at the Trust’s tenth annual learning disability conference in October to discuss national plans to transform care for people living with a learning disability or autism.

The Trust has celebrated the official opening of West Lane Hospital in Middlesbrough after a multi-million pound refurbishment to develop it as a centre of excellence for children and young people.

We’ve seen another flurry of awards and accreditations in recent months, highlighting the positive work of a wide-range of individuals, teams and services.

People now have until 16 January 2017 to give their views on the development of a new mental health hospital for the Vale of York.

We are proud to have staff who’ve worked a long time for the NHS.

The national ‘Freedom to Speak Up’ report into the culture of raising concerns in the NHS, led by Sir Robert Francis, recommended that all NHS trusts should have an independent and impartial source of advice to staff at any stage of raising a concern.

The medical staffing team are responsible for providing a human resources (HR) service for all medical staff working in TEWV.

Staff from community mental health teams in York and Selby came together to improve service user involvement in crisis planning.

Trust colleagues have worked with researchers from ITV’s Emmerdale programme on a mental health storyline aired inAugust.

Two members of staff are the first NHS staff in the UK to become certified trainers in the Teepa Snow Positive Approach™ to Care (PAC).

TEWV now has 24 involvement peers working Trustwide.

Public governors for the York constituency have been getting to grips with their role at TEWV; finding out more about the Trust and helping us to develop our plans for service delivery across York and Selby.

Over 200 people attended our annual general and members meeting (AGM) in July. This year’s theme was involvement and engagement.

Nominations are now open for the Making a Difference awards 2016.

TEWV mental health professionals have delivered a pilot training programme to North Yorkshire Police officers and staff.

The Trust, in partnership with Health Education England’s North East team, has hosted a conference to raise awareness of deliriumamong healthcare professionals.

The last few months have seen a number of achievements and a flurry of awards for teams across the Trust.

The Trust has worked with researchers from Exeter, York and Kings College London Universities on the COBRA (Cost Effectiveness of Behavioural Activation) study, to assess psychological treatments of depression.

Our annual vaccination campaign to help protect staff and patients from flu will start in October.

An underused plot of land has been transformed into a garden for children and young people with mental ill health.

Service users, carers and staff from adult learning disabilities services have been working together to develop philosophies of care for inpatient and community services.

A one-year pilot, believed to be the first of its kind, is offering patients access to a GP psychologist in their local surgery.

The Discovery Hub, a partnership project between the Trust and York St John University, was officially launched at a ceremony in June.

Specialist inpatient services for people with dementia living in County Durham and Darlington have been centralised at Auckland Park Hospital in Bishop Auckland and Picktree ward in Durham has closed.
