Deborah Cohen is an American historian who specialises in social history. Her latest book is FAMILY SECRETS: Living with Shame from the Victorians to the Present Day. On a Liverpool platform a heartbroken mother hands over her bastard child for adoption. In an Edinburgh town house a grandmother frets that the darkening shadow on her charge’s upper lip will give away her Eurasian heritage.
