Author Richard Havers talks to Chris Philips about his new book Blue Note: Uncompromising Expression

Richard Havers' new book commemorates 75 years of jazz record label Blue Note Records. Published by Thames and Hudson it's 400 pages of rare photographs, recording anecdotes, legendary album covers, historic impact and never before seen memorabilia and documents.

Started by German immigrants fleeing Nazi tyranny in 1939 the label has become recognised as the epitome of cool and intrinsically linked with the personality of America. Richard took time out to enlighten Jazz FM's Chris Philips, a huge fan of the label, on the journey and joy that manifested this incredible document.

The book is available now through all the usual vendors and Richard will be hosting two free drop-in Blue Note events on Thursday 20th and Friday 21st November at Ace Hotel in London's Shoreditch. He will also be hosting a Q&A with Blue Note Supremo Don Was as a prelude to a grand musical celebration of the anniversary at Royal Festival Hall on Saturday 22nd November as part of EFG London Jazz Festival. Current Blue Note artists Robert Glasper and Jason Moran will play back to back followed by Glasper with a stellar line-up including trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, bassist Derrick Hodge, drummer Kendrick Scott, guitarist Lionel Loueke and saxophonist Marcus Strickland.
