April 2018: Part 3 of Harnessing the potential: renewable energy in the Swansea Bay City Region

Feedback from the leaders of the breakout sessions at the IWA Re-energising Wales event "Harnessing the potential: renewable energy in the Swansea Bay City Region" at the National Maritime Museum, Swansea on 30th April 2018.

Question posed to the groups was:

 “What are the short and medium term opportunities to make progress towards 100% renewable energy in the Swansea Bay City Region (SBCR)?”.

Groups were as follows:

1. Buildings (Led by Keith Watts, IWA)

What are the short and medium term opportunities to drive energy efficiency measures and on-site generation of renewable energy across the SBCR building stock. What is already happening, and what can we build on? 

2. Harnessing offshore wind and marine energy (Led by Auriol Miller, IWA)

What are the short and medium term opportunities to harness offshore wind and marine energy in the SBCR? What is already happening, and what can we build on? 

3. Onshore Renewable Electricity Generation (Led by Stuart Irvine, Swansea University)

What are the short and medium term opportunities to harness the range of onshore renewable electricity generation technologies in the SBCR? E.g. onshore wind, solar PV, hydro? What is already happening, and what can we build on? 

4. Renewable Heat Generation (Led by Steven Edwards, Wales and West Utilities)

What are the short and medium term opportunities to decarbonise the sources of heat supply in the SBCR? One key area to consider is how to maximise the commercial potential of bioenergy? What is already happening, and what can we build on? 

5. The transport revolution (Led by Rhea Stevens, IWA)

What are the short and medium term opportunities to decarbonise transport in the SBCR? What should be central to an integrated transport, energy and air quality strategy? What is already happening, and what can we build on? 

6. Industry (Led by Chris Williams, TATA)

What are the short and medium term energy opportunities within the SBCR to decarbonise heavy industry? What is already happening, and what can we build on? 

7. Smart, flexible and local energy (Led by David Clubb, RenewableUK Cymru)

What are the short and medium term opportunities for the SBCR in establishing an interdisciplinary steering group, including public, private and voluntary sectors, to map out the practical steps that need be taken to ensure the region takes full advantage of the smart energy transformation for its people and communities? What is already happening, and what can we build on?
