Remembering 'Comrade' Somnath Chatterjee
Former Lok Sabha speaker and veteran CPI(M) leader Somnath Chatterjee on 13 August passed away in Kolkatta at the age of 89. Somnath Chatterjee was the speaker of Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009 during the UPA1 government. Somnath Chatterjee was associated with the Communist Party of India(Marxist) and was served as the Member of Lok Sabha for 10 terms. Somnath Chatterjee also won the outstanding Parliamentarian award in the year 1996. Somnath Chatterjee was expelled from CPI(M) after he refused to resign from the post of speaker in 2008 when his party withdrew its support from the UPA-1 government during the Indo-American Nuclear deal.
