When large numbers of people had to be identified in a crowd, some common identity for a Family was needed , and caste name took the place of this collective ; Sharma for a brha,min,Varma for a Kshatriya, Badhayi for a Carpenter , Rakaj for a Laundry man etc Regional variations of the caste names added to this trend and eventually,official titles like Raja,Mantri,Diwan, Senapati etc were aded to this title and continuous tradition in the same family to take up the same work made the title the surnames.
