Jeweller - Lucie Gledhill

This week’s guest is the super creative and technically patient Jeweller, Lucie Gledhill.

Lucie runs her own makers studio where she creates exhibition pieces of jewellery, collections and also teaches and runs workshops.

Knowing herself to be a maker for as long as she can remember, her process is completely involved. She makes her own alloys - melting metals together, which gives her a complete understanding of how what she produces will behave.

Conceptually she is drawn to myths and contradiction. One example is her exploration of the idea of what ‘chain’ is. Lucie likes to undermine and contradict the notion that ‘chain’ is to add strength and flexibility.

From forming the idea, to learning the technique, through to making the piece: her unique one-offs can take years to produce. She is extremely patient and loves working slowly in a determined way. This focus couldn’t be more evident than in her piece titled, ‘Rope is Patient.’ An extremely long rope chain made of fine soldered wires that took a number of years to complete.

I am in absolute admiration of Lucie’s examination of the perception of what we know certain things to be and then her subsequent acceptance in the process… in time, to develop and craft these ‘certainties’ into a new way of seeing or thinking.
