As a result, she was described as an 'outright advocate for white supremacy' by Vox, and a petition calling for her to be fired has gathered over 50,000 signatures. So what did she say, and is it fair to characterise her comments as racist? And if she didn't want to be seen in that way, why did she use some of the inflammatory language that she did?
