Departure Lounge with Barwon Legal Centre Service - Emma
Episode 449, May 07, 2020, 11:57 PM
Due to COVID-19 there are a lot of people who have become recently unemployed and who are coming into contact with Centrelink for the first time ever, or for the first time in a very long time.
The Social Security system can be really confusing and it is really important to know what your rights are, what payments you might be eligible for and that if you run into trouble it can be a good idea to speak to a lawyer. Barwon Community Legal Service provides free legal help to people experiencing Centrelink problems.
Here are some common questions community members have been asking about Centrelink issues arising out of the CVOID-19 pandemic.
"I’ve lost my job because of COVID-19, what Centrelink payments am I eligible for?"
"Does my partner’s income and assets matter?"
"So you’ve figured out which payment you’re eligible for, now what?"
"If I am already on Centrelink, will I automatically get the COVID-19 coronavirus supplement and economic support payment paid in March and in July? How much and who is eligible? "
"If I am receiving a Centrelink Payment do I still have to fulfil mutual obligations during this time?"
"What if I have a Centrelink debt? Do I have to continue paying this off during this time?"
Emma Cvitak from Barwon Legal Centre Service knows Centrelink (and is bloody passionate about the law around it and your right to the service). Emma checked into the Departure Lounge with Stampsy and Josh to answer your questions.
