Ep6: Post-Traumatic Growth - Sophie Trew
Season 2, Sep 14, 2020, 03:00 AM
We've probably all experienced a form of trauma in our lives - loss, sickness, abuse, discrimination, injury, redundancy - and right now trauma levels seem to be at a peak.
This week we look at what can grow beyond the despair of trauma and these experiences can fundamentally reshape us and even provide renewed purpose in life. My guest has lived through her own experience of deep trauma following being diagnosed with blood cancer at 23, and having to put life on hold just when life is meant to start open up and accelerate. In her own words she went from a life of 'tequila to spirulina'.
Sophie Trew is co-founder of the Trew Fields Festival - the world's first cancer awareness and holistic health festival. She is also a post-traumatic growth coach, meditation teacher & breathworker.
She talks about how her training as a journalist helped us ask questions of medical science rather than sit back and accept the prognosis. She also asked 'why us' not just 'why me' in a bid to understand why cancer is so prevalent in our society and why survival rates are so low. And she shares much of what worked for her in her battle to beat cancer. We talk about gut health and Sophie talks me through a great breathwork exercise you can all use right now.
To find out more about Sophie and the festival go to the Trew Fields website.
You can also follow Sophie on Instagram @sophie_trew and the festival @trewfields.festival
And yes this is a cancer story, so it could be quite tiggering for some of you. As I mention in the intro, a former colleague passed away just last week from Bowel Cancer so for that reason I'm sharing a link to Bowel Cancer UK if you'd like to donate to support their vital work.
