Ep4: On Overcoming Challenges - Duncan Slater
Season 3, Mar 08, 2021, 10:30 AM
This week my guest is Duncan Slater, former Royal Airforce infantry solider and his story of injury, recovery and incredible sporting achievement.
We start in the far north of Scotland, then move to war-torn Afghanistan before taking us to the searing heat of the Saharan desert in southern Morocco.
Duncan talks very candidly about the incident in Afghanistan which left him critically injured after his patrol was hit by an IED. We talk about the choice Duncan faced - whether to keep his injured legs or amputate.
Having cycled Lands End to John O'Groats just months after losing both legs, then walking to the South Pole with Prince Harry and completing the London Marathon - he still wanted to do more, push himself further and raise more money and awareness - to ultimately answer the question "what am I capable of now?”
The second half of our chat is the story of how Duncan took on and eventually completed the toughest footrace on the planet - without feet - and he became the first double amputee to complete the fabled Marathon des Sables in 2017. The Marathon des Sables, or MdS, is a six-day, 251 km ultramarathon, which is approximately the distance of six regular marathons. The longest single stage is 91 km long.
Here is an ITV News clip of his preparation for the 2017 race
