The Film Show - 17/03/2021 - Diversity Festival Special

Review of The Personal History of David Copperfield, and talking about the BAFTA nominations & diversity in the film industry.
Welcome back to the Film Show! On this one we're chatting about the star-studded Armando Iannucci love letter to Dickens: 'The Personal History of David Copperfield' & the new BAFTA nominations!
As part of UoN's Diversity Festival we chat a lot about the failings of the film industry in diversifying things in front of and behind the camera and especially in relation to the BAFTA's wonderful push for diversity! We're talking about colour-blind vs identity-conscious casting, rejections of auteur and 'great man' theories, amplifying BIPOC voices & stories using awards and how much we still have to do!
Plus, we review 'The Personal History of David Copperfield', a fantastic film that was a widely publicised use of colour-blind casting & just an absolutely cracking take on Dickens' work with Dev Patel's great lead performance really standing out.
+ I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't direct y'all to Khadija Mbowe, who has great videos on colour-blind casting, colourism, stereotypes in media and much more! :
