Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 16th January 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

My news yesterday that I had quit my day job, and indeed a 25 year radio career, seemed to resonate with people. Either those who had done something similar to chase a dream or those who wanted to.

So to those on Patreon…

CLARIFICATION ON THE HARLEY DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE

  • From Sabrina Giacomini at RideApart.com: "However, in recent years, innovation hasn’t been part of the brand’s lingo—its almost as though it’s been sitting on its legacy and relying on that and only that to sell bikes. The LiveWire had the potential to change that and open new doors. While it hasn’t completely failed, I don't believe it has succeeded either. The way I see it, there are 2 reasons for that and here's my two cent about it."
  • So what are those two reasons? And is one of them the range which I told you was my main let down.
  • "Today, people have access to more electric models options than ever and while 110 miles is a decent range for an electric bike, it might not be enough for the LiveWire to stand out of the stylish, efficient, and affordable electric motorcycle crowd. Because now we all know: an electric orange comes at a price.
  • The company announced on Monday that the LiveWire was on track to hit the showrooms this year and that the price tag would be set at $29,799. With young adults dealing with more debt than ever, $30k will be better spent on purchasing a car (or groceries) than a bike."
  • "The company did have the opportunity to bring Alta Motors on board, a well-established competitor in the field of electric bikes that likely would have propelled H-D forward in its electric ambitions. Would a partnership have resulted in a cheaper LiveWire? Maybe not, but Alta's contribution to the project could have meant a sweeter deal for the money."
  • So i got it wrong with 59 miles, I don't think i was looking at the correct number.
  • The Harley website says: "The high-voltage battery, or RESS, provides an estimated 110 miles of range, measured using the MIC mixed-use cycle. Riding range estimates based on current SAE testing of LiveWire concept motorcycle. Actual riding range will vary based on several factors including weather and driving conditions."

LYNK & CO'S HATCHBACK DROPS MAJOR CAMO IN NEW SPY PICS

  • "Lynk & Co is progressing with the development of its fourth model which will take the shape of a compact hatchback. This fresh batch of spy photos reveals the company is in the advanced stages of testing as its prototype is featuring less and less camouflage." reports Anthony for Motor1.com: "According to unconfirmed information, the model will be based on the architecture that will also underpin Volvo’s upcoming revamped 40 series of compact cars. The Swedish hatch and small wagon are rumored to go fully electric, but that won’t be the case with Lynk & Co’s sibling. It may seem like a conventional ICE-powered vehicle but underneath the skin should be a compact plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor. This system should be good for a purely electric range of about 50 miles (80 kilometers)"

JAGUAR AFFIRMS FORMULA E COMMITMENT DESPITE IMPENDING CUTS

  • "Jaguar Land Rover revealed last week that it will cut 4,500 jobs from its global operations, with the majority of them hitting management roles in the UK and the company set to start a voluntary redundancy programme." says Alex Kalinauckas for Motor1.com: "But [James] Barclay, the FE squad’s team principal, stated that Jaguar would carry on racing for the “longer-term” as it fits with the manufacturer’s recent drive towards electrification on its road car models. "It’s an unprecedented time for the car industry,” he told Motorsport.com: “A lot of geopolitical factors are affecting the industry at the moment – a slowdown in China, slowdown in diesel sales and we have that small matter of Brexit in the UK, which is affecting consumer confidence. So, we have to take some key decisions now to protect the long-term future of our company. [It’s] really important we make those steps now. But at the same time, we also announced that we’ll be building electric drive units at our engine manufacturing plant in Wolverhampton and also building a battery plant in Birmingham."

GAC MOTOR UNVEILS CONCEPT CAR ENTRANZE

  • GAC Motor officially announced that it has registered its North American Sales Company in Irvine, Calif., near Los Angeles. The regional headquarters will be responsible for branding, marketing, product planning and financial affairs.
  • GAC Motor also announced at the press conference that the GAC R&D Center Detroit has officially begun operation. Located in Farmington Hills, Mich., the new R&D center was built with an investment of US$ 4.4 million and encompasses nearly 50,000 square feet of real estate.
  • And as for their new electric concept, it's the ENTRANZE. "The Slick Bullet shaped exterior is completely breathtaking in the real flesh and introduces brand new proportions. New 3+2+2 seating arrangement and ‘aircraft inspired aisle’. Two-side mounted displays for functional feature control, plus curved displays for passenger entertainment. With most of the car made of environmentally sustainable materials, the interior of ENTRANZE is more influenced by home decoration than cars and is a great contrast to the technology and the stark exterior."

RENAULT EXPANDS ZOE FLEET IN ZITY CAR SHARING IN SPAIN

  • "The new electric car sharing service Zity in Madrid, Spain turns out to be very popular as 157,000 people used it in the first year." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The fleet of 500 Renault ZOE Z.E. 40 is soon to be expanded by another 150 ZOE to 650 total by the end of January. We don’t know the number of trips, but as many customers were using Zity more than once, it’s maybe on the track to profitability."

WHY THE MCLAREN P1 IS A LIVING LEGEND

  • "The 903bhp McLaren P1 is now six years old but remains an awe-inspiring machine. Motorious hosted the McLaren halo car at Autosport International 2019" says AutoClassics.com. Although it's not a Plug In car, it was a very early hybrid supercar. Using the Formula-1 inspired hybrid technology for performance, it was the first of a new breed. These days no supercar would be complete without a big battery so help out the wheezing old fossil engine. And since then we've had fully electric supercars from the likes of the Rimac Concept One, and the Rimac C_Two.

BRAKE PAD REPLACEMENT ON EVS

  • "The day after Christmas, Tesla CEO Elon Musk gave us an unexpected gift. Brake pads on Teslas would “literally never” need to be replaced, he said, thanks in part to the electric car’s regenerative brakes cutting way down on brake pad use compared to a conventional car. That seemed a little too good to be true! But maybe not impossible, exactly" said Erik Shilling of Jalopnik. But then he asked, would an EV maker really say you never need to replace them?
  • He asked Jaguar who said: "The brake pads on the I-PACE do indeed need to be replaced periodically. As you might imagine, the rate at which this is required varies widely owner to owner, based on his/her individual driving style. The battery must be below approximately 80% state of charge in order to receive the full benefit of the resistance of the electric motors. The idea here is that we can’t overcharge the battery and force additional electrons in, if it’s already full, so the resistance provided by the motors gradually does decrease the fuller the battery is requiring the use of the standard braking system."
  • And Erik asked GM: "The regenerative braking feature of the Bolt EV allows the vehicle to decelerate with less use of the vehicle’s base hydraulic brake system. However, the actual mileage that the brake lining’s life could be extended varies due to the parameters under which the vehicle is driven."
  • Tesla didn’t reply to his request for comment but hey if Elon has tweeted, don't correct the boss. Leave it.

DIESEL POPULARITY ON AUTO TRADER FALLS 40% IN TWO YEARS

  • "Searches for diesel cars on Auto Trader have plummeted 40% over the past two years. The online classified marketplace said the proportion of fuel related searches attributed to diesel on Auto Trader has dropped from a high of 71% in November 2016, to a record low of 47% last month." in a new MotorTrader.com article: "Annually, between 2017 and 2018, there was a 40% increase in consumers searching for AFVs, with electric alone recording a spike of 52%. In just two years, searches for AFVs and pure electric have increased a significant 130% and 179% respectively."

HACK YOUR WAY INTO A NEW TESLA MODEL 3

  • "Tesla has been working closely with white hat hackers for years in order to make its vehicle software safer and now it’s taking an unprecedented step: it’s going to be giving away a Model 3 to a hacker who can crack the vehicle." reports Fred Lambert at Electrek: "Over the past 4 years, Tesla has been running a bug bounty program and according to sources familiar with the effort, the company has given away hundreds of thousands in rewards to hackers who exposed vulnerabilities in its systems. The automaker increased its max payout per reported bug to $15,000 last year and it also took a great step in reassuring owners who are hacking their own vehicles. Tesla said that it will not void its warranty when a vehicle is hacked for “pre-approved good faith security research:”
  • But now the top prize being offered is even more valuable, a free car to the winner of a hacking contest.
