Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 4th December 2018. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through EV story today so you don’t have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
Three new Patrons to welcome to the gang. First up a new Producer NORMAN BOLDUC. Another Producer is ANDREW from notheast-solar.com. And new Executive Producer RUPERT MITCHELL.
On my Twitter DMs today I heard from both the podcast Premium Partner PHIL ROBERTS from Electric Future ef.energy, and Richard Graham. Both are Model 3 UK reservation holders and both got an email inviting them to go and see the car in the UK this week.
Following up my thoughts yesterday that I'd love to see Formula E on more heritage F1 circuits, Alex Cottis dropped me a DM to say that Formaula E is all about bring motorsport to new audiences and the silence of the cars means they can race in cities and at night with no objection.
Talking about where the new Fiat 500e will be built, Marco Mascarello message me to say my pronunciation of Mirafiori was just about as bad as it gets! Thank you for the clarification.
And finally before the new a selfish thank-you. You know the saga of the Renault Zoe we bought from the dealer in Dorset called Westover Renault, and on the day it arrived the radio aerial was missing? Despite my calls...nothing. WILL ADAMS from DSG in Morecambe in the UK, who sells a load of Zoe's and I wish I'd bought mine from him now I was just being lazy and staying local, Will heard the podcast and what turns up in the mail, an aerial for a Renault Zoe. That's what you call aftercare!
And to everyone who messaged me with this story:
2,400 EV CHARGING BAYS ACROSS 600 TESCO STORES
- In one announcement the UK public charging network just got bigger by 14%!
- Pod Point, the Chargepoint installer, say: "Located at 600 Tesco stores throughout the UK, and sponsored by Volkswagen, we’re working together to roll out 2,400 EV charging bays across 600 Tesco stores within the next three years. The charging bays will be based in Tesco Extra and Superstore car parks throughout the United Kingdom, and made up of a combination of 7KW fast chargers - which will be free to use - and 50kW rapids, which will be priced in line with market rates. Our partnership with Tesco and Volkswagen, which effectively creates a new, sponsorship-based business model for EV charging, has been in the works for some time."
- Geraldine Ingham, Head of Marketing at Volkswagen UK: “This incredibly exciting partnership with Tesco, powered by Pod Point, underlines the scale and ambition of our electric car programme in the UK. Working with these partners to provide such an extensive network of EV chargers should leave no one in any doubt about the Volkswagen brand’s wholehearted commitment to an electric future.”
NOVEMBER EV SALES
- It's the start of the month so the sales figures come in. First up..."41.3% (5,090) of Norway‘s November new passenger registrations were pure BEV electric cars. Add PHEV to that (1,195) and the plug-in mix was... 60.1%" says auto analyst Matthias Schmidt @auto_schmidt
$10 MILLION GRANT WILL PROVIDE MORE CHARGING STATIONS FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES
- "The Colorado Energy Office awarded a $10.33 million grant to a California company to install 33 fast-charging stations for electric vehicles across the state." according to THe Sentinel: "The grant is part of a multi-state program to increase the number of charging stations to encourage the sale of more electric vehicles. The company that won the award was ChargePoint, which has similar charging stations throughout the nation and Canada, including several in Grand Junction. The grant money is part of the state's settlement agreement with Volkswagen over allegations that the Germany-based company violated the federal Clear Air Act by selling vehicles that emit more air pollution than the act allows, and by cheating on federal emission tests to hide that excess pollution."
KIA E-NIRO ELECTRIC CAR RANGE DOWNGRADED AFTER TEST ERROR
- "THE official range for the all-new Kia e-Niro has been downgraded after it was found that the testing agency hadn’t followed the official procedure." according to a story i saw in a UK newsaper today called The Express: "An external independent testing firm has been blamed for the error as they failed to apply the correct WLTP procedures. What this meant was that the car was tested for a disproportionate length on the WLTP urban cycle. The problem with this is that urban testing comprises of lower overall vehicle speed and reduced energy requirement which lead to an over-estimation of the car’s range. Now, the new Kia e-Niro 64kWh has an official range of 282-miles instead of the quoted 301-miles."

CHINESE BRANDS FOR EUROPE
- Funny enough as out MYEV.com Question of The Week is all about whether you'd buy a Chinese ev, presuming you're listening to this NOT in China! Please do send me your answer.
- "Great Wall Motor, the mainland’s largest maker of sport-utility vehicles (SUVs), plans to make inroads into Europe with its electric vehicles in 2020, helped by a new brand expected to bolster its growth --known as Ora." reports the South China MOrning Post: "Ning Shuyong, vice-president of the Baoding-based vehicle maker, said Great Wall had begun studying ways to build out its global distribution system for electric vehicles with the ultimate goal of selling to Europe, part of the company’s efforts to go global. The group unveiled in September the first model by Ora, the iQ crossover. Ora will unveil its new model R1, a four-seat mini electric vehicle with a range of up to 350km in mid-December. The R1, which will have a sticker price of about 110,000 yuan (US$15,817), takes on Chery Automobile Company’s Ant mini and JAC Motors’ iEV6 on the mainland."
- Meanwhile, "NIO said on social media site Weibo that it has delivered 8,030 cars putting it on track to win a bet with rival Xiaopeng Motors, another billion-dollar EV startup, backed by China’s e-commerce giant Alibaba." says Quartz: "Reaching that number would be a major milestone for NIO, putting it not so far behind Tesla, widely admired in China. Last year, Tesla sold 17,670 cars, which put it in among the top 10 sellers of fully electric cars in China. This year, the California-based company founded by Elon Musk sold around 14,000 fully electric vehicles in the first nine months, according to China Passenger Car Association, which gets its data from companies."

NISSAN LEAF SALES DOWN SLIGHTLY IN U.S. IN NOVEMBER
- "Steady is how LEAF sales have rolled most of the year, but now we see another slight downturn." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "With just 1,128 LEAFs sold in November, sales again are down compared to the 1,234 LEAF sold in October. It now seems the best figure Nissan can hope for in all of 2018 is somewhere near 15,000 LEAFs sold. That’s a disappoint if you consider that in the best of times (2014 ) LEAF sales hit upwards of 30,000 units in a single year."

FINALLY...‘INSPIRATIONAL’ YOUNGSTER TRAVELS 300 MILES TO DUNDEE PLACING THANK YOU NOTES ON ELECTRIC VEHICLES
- "An “inspirational” young environmentalist travelled 300 miles from Birmingham to Dundee placing hundreds of thank you notes on electric vehicles. 12-year-old West Midlands youngster Charlotte Smith was yesterday made the youngest ever member of Electric Vehicle Association (EVA) Scotland in recognition of her incredible efforts." according to The Courier: "She began placing small notes on the windshields of car owners last year in and around her hometown of Solihull with the help of her dad Steven after learning emissions can cause a range of lung conditions. With Dundee recently hailed as the “most visionary city in Europe” for electric vehicles, Charlotte mapped out a route to make the City of Discovery her final stop. Elinor Chalmers, a board member of EVA Scotland, yesterday presented Charlotte with an EVA Scotland membership pack at the city’s new Princes Street Charging Hub."
