Episode 12,   Sep 06, 2021, 09:01 AM

In the first episode of our mini- series, we talk about eating disorder terminology in sport, particularly relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S), which describes the consequences of not having enough energy available as a sporting athlete; whether this is due to being under-fuelled or over exercising.

We're joined by Senior Lecturer of Loughborough University and former 800 metre international athlete, Carolyn Plateau.

Episode 1 is all about eating disorder terminology in sport, particularly relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S), which describes the consequences of not having enough energy available as a sporting athlete; whether this is due to being under-fuelled or over exercising.

In this episode we cover:

  • the different terminology around eating disorders in sport
  • what is relative energy-deficiency in sport?
  • the main features of an eating disorder or disordered eating
  • what has causes an under fuelled state to occur
  • spotting an eating disorder or disordered eating

Part of sport safeguarding is being able to spot the signs when something is wrong and implementing procedures that encourage communication and openness, RED-S can happen in any sporting activity, but there is particular prominence in high performance athletes and those that play competitively.
