Opal Lee spent decades quietly working for the poor and to preserve the history of Fort Worth’s Black community. At 86, she began working for a national recognition of Juneteenth, the historic day Black Texans in Galveston learned they were free from slavery. In 2021, we named Ms. Opal our Texan of the Year.
