Jul 13, 2022, 08:27 PM
Dallas Morning News architecture critic Mark Lamster and features writer Michael Granberry discuss the Dallas Arts District.
The men offer an overview of the cluster of institutions here on Flora Street, anchored by the Dallas Museum of Art. Lamster describes how the arts district originally emerged in Fair Park, but race and money brought it farther north.
Granberry offers a backstory (3:10) on Flora Street and the Arts District and how it almost became the site of a sports stadium for the Dallas Cowboys.
Lamster gives more specific background on the major institutions (5:48) including the Nasher, Meyerson Symphony Center, AT&T Performing Arts Center (which includes Winspear Opera House, Wyly Theatre), Moody Performance Hall and the new Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Arts.
Finally, Granberry shares some arts district criticisms (6:48 - 8:12) that he routinely hears. Lamster describes the city's future plans for the district.
