Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek on Longtime Friendship and Love for Their Puss in Boots: The Last Wish Characters at NYC Premiere
Episode 272, Dec 14, 2022, 11:26 PM
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish stars Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Harvey Guillen, and Wagner Moura hit the red carpet for the premiere of the animated film last night at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.
We chat with Banderas about his beloved feline character, whom the world first saw in 2004’s Shrek 2. Puss in Boots went on to get his own spin-off movies Puss in Boots (2011) and Puss in Boots: The Three Diablos (2012), making it ten years since the last release. “It’s almost like visiting an old friend,” the actor said about returning to the role.
In the latest film, Puss is down to the last of his nine lives, leaving him reevaluating life. “But in this movie, he comes to terms with himself in a completely different way, deeper, more complex, more existentialist in a way,” Banderas told us. “It’s been a pleasure to take him to that place because at the end of this adventure, we present to the audience….the end of the adventure is the love of life, and a reflection that is very beautiful is the need that we have for each other…”.
Hayek, who has been friends with Banderas for decades, said she loved working with her longtime co-star. “Sometimes we improvise as Puss in Boots and Kitty Softpaws because we just love the characters,” she told us.
Catch the cats in action when the movie hits theaters on December 21.
