Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie premiered on Friday at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The documentary, from Oscar winner Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth, 2006 Sundance Film Festival), recounts the remarkable life and career of Michael J. Fox. From his breakout role as Alex P. Keaton on the sitcom Family Ties to Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy, Fox became a superstar in the 80s. But at age 29, Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Guggenheim recalled an interview he read with the actor in the New York Times about how Fox dealt with a terrible fall. “I found in his writing and the way he expressed this terrible moment to be so funny and human and light,” he said. The documentary shows Fox's challenges of living with this incurable disease and his public advocacy for Parkinson’s research with eternal optimism and gratitude. "Michael just kept me laughing. When you see this movie, you're going to see a lot of laughter, a lot of joy," said Guggenheim.
Producer Annetta Marion described the film as being about "love and persistence and tenacity and doing more and doing better with whatever cards you've been dealt.”
Ever the optimist, Fox said, "With gratitude, optimism is sustainable. Just live life and enjoy ourselves." He quipped, "And don’t fall down."
