The Unsolved Death of Steven Smith: Was It Connected to the Murdaugh Family and Their Secrets?

Feb 21, 2023, 04:00 PM

Steven Smith was a 19-year-old man who was found dead in the middle of a country road 15 miles from the Murdaugh family's hunting lodge in South Carolina on July 8, 2015. The death was initially ruled as a hit-and-run, but Smith's mother has always believed that her son was the victim of a hate crime and the murder was covered up. The case was reopened as part of the investigation into the shooting deaths of mother and son, Maggie and Paul Murdaugh. Initial reports suggested that there was no evidence of a vehicle accident and that Smith had a gunshot wound above his right eye. Furthermore, there were tips questioning whether Smith had a relationship with Paul's older brother, Richard 'Buster' Murdaugh. Despite the evidence, the manner of death was listed as 'undetermined' in the autopsy and ruled as a hit-and-run.
