Idaho Lawmaker Believes Firing Squad a More Humane Option for Executions

The brutal slayings of four young college students in Moscow, Idaho have reignited a debate about the very essence of justice in the state. Accused murderer Bryan Kohberger, 28, faces the possibility of the ultimate punishment if he is found guilty, with prosecutors potentially recommending the death penalty. At the same time, a bill has been introduced by Republican state lawmaker Rep. Bruce Skaug that would legalize firing squad as a form of execution in addition to lethal injection. The bill states that the Idaho Department of Corrections must determine if lethal injection is an available method within five days of a death warrant, and if not, the IDOC may elect to use a firing squad. The use of a firing squad was legal in Idaho from 1982 to 2009, but the recent difficulty in acquiring the necessary chemicals for lethal injection has sparked a heated debate.
