Episode 61, Sep 24, 2023, 08:40 PM
Harry Bucknall’s love of travel blossomed in early childhood exploring the creeks, islands and inlets of Poole harbour in a mirror dinghy. He served in the army and is now a writer in the tradition of great adventurers chronicling his long walks in stories laced with humour, inspiration and sheer grit. In The Dolphin’s Wake, Harry’s first book, told the story of his 5,500 mile journey from Venice to Istanbul through the Greek Archipelago in the summer of 2006. Like a Tramp, Like a Pilgrim took us on a vivid 94-day, 1,411-mile pilgrimage following the ancient Via Francigena through England, France, Switzerland and Italy. His work has won praise from Hollywood actor Martin Sheen, gardening celebrity, Alan Tidmarsh and doyen of travel writing Sir Patrick Leigh Fermor.
His latest book, A Road for All Seasons, is out next year with the story of his walk from the Isle of Iona across the breadth of the British Isle on a quest to better understand his island nation. Rarely one to rest, Harry is presently developing a new project, The Trans-Arabian Camel Expedition, recreating the Queen of Sheba’s 2,000 mile journey by camel from Salalah in Oman to Jerusalem across the Arabian desert. Join Harry with Humphrey Hawksley for an adventure Goldster Conversation of a lifetime 12.00 London time, Thursday August 24th 2023.
