LIVE LIFE BETTER: How Losing Your Sense Of Smell May Indicate Brain Issues
Season 2, Episode 204, Oct 30, 05:33 PM
In this episode of Live Life Better, host Nanette Wiser explores the relation between scent and cognition, and how losing your sense of smell may signal issues in the brain and may be an early detection marker for Alzheimers. Olfactory training may help as part of treatment for depression as well. New research studies are learing more about the link. The sense of smell declines with age, and loss of olfactory function is also an early symptom of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. While previous research found the sense of smell was associated with brain volume and function, no studies had examined longitudinal changes within an individual across the whole brain and by cognitive status.
