News Director Nanette Wiser caught up with powerhouse Susan Gore about the upcoming SpeakOUT event. On November 14 7-9 pm at Gulfport Library, LGBTQ+ activist Susan Gore will moderate: SpeakOUT: LGBTQ Identity and Law, Literature and Media. This interactive roundtable will discuss projected trends in queer literature, law and media representations in relation to different November 5 election outcomes. For example:
· What is it about “queer” literature or media visibility that is seen as threatening by some and valuable by others?
· How do current attempts to restrict access to books and/or discussion of LGBTQ topics create dilemmas for educators, parents, students and society at large?
· How may these dilemmas be addressed productively?
MODERATOR Susan Gore, Ph.D., is the past president of the board of OUT Arts & Culture. Her career as an educator includes academic positions, nonprofit leadership and corporate DEI consulting. She is the co-editor of Coming Out in Faith: Voices of LGBTQ Unitarian Universalists and A Feminist Mental Health Agenda for the Year 2000, which was presented at the UN Decade for Women World Conference in Nairobi, Kenya in 1985.
MEDIA Bryan Hinkson is a Graphic Design graduate of St. Pete College, now at Cox Media, and a proud Suncoast Softball Hall of Fame member. His voice is heard on the Big Gay Radio Show from midnight to 3 a.m. on WMNF 88.5 FM.
Steven Schoen, Ph.D., is Film Program Director and Associate Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at Rollins College. He specializes in documentary production and LGBTQ+ media representations. His work includes Making Sense Under a Midnight Sun: Transdisciplinary Art, Documentary Film and Cultural Exchange and the documentary, Groaning from the Soul, which recounts Holocaust survivor Jerry Rawicki’s trip to the Nazi death camp where her mother and sister died.
LITERATURE and LAW Nathan Bruemmer, J.D., is a Florida native who has served as a classroom teacher, non-profit leader, and Florida's former LGBTQ+ Consumer Advocate. He serves on the American Bar Association Commission on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) and as co-chair of the ABA’s Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice SOGI Committee.
Erin Decker is the co-owner of White Rose Books & More in Kissimmee, Florida. Previously, Erin used her B.S. in Math and Science Education and her Masters in Library and Information Science for nearly 10 years as a school library media specialist.
Silk Jazmyne has an M.F.A. in Creative Writing and numerous years of experience in writing, editing, and publishing speculative fiction. Her work appears online and in print at Black Girl Nerds, Midnight & Indigo, African Writer Magazine, and Ekphrastic Exhibition in Tandem: Back | Forth.
