Historically St. Pete w/Rui Farias: Gwendolyn Reece
Season 2, Episode 218, Nov 06, 06:38 PM
In this episode of Historically St. Pete, St. Petersburg Museum of History executive director talks with Gwendolyn Reese, president and chief executive officer of Peaten Reese Peaten Consulting, and president of the African American Heritage Association of St. Petersburg in Florida. She has worked hard to make sure that history, and the successes of the early African American population will not be forgotten.
She has dedicated more than 30 years of her career to working with organizations focused on social justice, equity, and anti-racism, and is known for her nonprofit leadership work within the region. Impacted deeply as a child by racist policy and Jim Crow laws, Ms. Reese remembers questioning and rebelling against racist structures from a young age.
Says Rui: "It is no secret that the early years of St. Petersburg were not easy the city’s African American population. Racism, segregation, Jim Crow laws, white-only elections, and even those loved green benches were a flashpoint. For a town built by northern transplants, it was incredibly in the deep south. Black neighborhoods were formed, and even thrived, and over the years, the city, we want to believe, has become more inclusive." Join them for this fascinating interview.
