The Neighbor from the Basement

A single mom with special needs children is pushed to her limit by her new downstairs neighbor, Danny. At first, it's just loud music on Sunday nights, but Danny's inconsiderate behavior quickly escalates.  He mocks her attempts to get him to quiet down, throws loud parties, and even blames her for attracting rats with his overflowing garbage. The landlord is no help, sympathizing with Danny's recent divorce and job loss instead of addressing the noise complaints.  Driven to the edge of sanity by sleep deprivation and Danny's relentless antagonism, our narrator considers calling the police but ultimately decides to fight fire with fire.  Just when she's ready to give up, Danny surprises her with an apology and a six-pack of beer.  Is this a genuine change of heart, or just a temporary reprieve?
