MUSIC SCENE: Alexis Cole w/Helios Orchestra 4/1 St. Petersburg Jazz Festival

In this episode of MUSIC SCENE, host Nanette Wiser catches up with legendary jazz vocalist, pianist and educator Alexis Cole, who returns on April 1 to perform with the Helios Big Band Orchestra at The Palladium as parr of the St. Petersburg Jazz Festival 3/31-4/3. She has been busy since we spoke to her last year with the JazzVoice.com (founder and director) with programs featuring Nnenna Freelon and Veronica Swift for the first time. She is also co-founder and co-director of the Virginia Beach Vocal Jazz Summit now in its 5th year and will host the summit June 5-8 featuring Rene Marie, Christie Dashiell, Grammy winner Samara Joy (my student), Kate McGarry and Theo Bleckmann.  Cole is working with her father Mark Finkin on a project of his music, culminating in a concert on Father’s Day this June and recording this summer with Reid Hoysen, a project of the composer Val Hawk’s music.  Cole shuttles between NYC and downtown St. Pete in between performances and tours.
