The Lady on the Landing | After Midnight

When she was three, her mother often heard her talking quietly on the upstairs landing. Not playing—conversing. Her daughter spoke calmly, thoughtfully, as if answering questions. When asked who she was talking to, she replied simply: the lady on the landing.
The woman was described as a teacher. Kind, but strict. Someone she respected. Then the conversations stopped—and something else began.
By the time she was eight, the landing felt heavy. Lights there never worked. Fear replaced familiarity. One night, she woke at 3:32 a.m. to a sudden, bone-deep cold and saw a tall, black figure hovering near the doorway. When it returned every Sunday night, always at the same hour, she learned the difference between fear and intrusion.
Looking back, she realized something unsettling: the childhood companion and the later presence were not the same. One watched. The other crossed boundaries. And only one had ever felt protective.
