Two children lost both parents in a single night. A one-year-old and four-year-old were found physically unharmed but alone in the house with the bodies of Spencer and Monique Tepe.

Those kids are now being raised by family. Over a thousand people attended the funeral. And everyone touched by this case is asking the same question: What could Monique have done differently?

The answer might be nothing. She recognized the danger early. She got out in seven months. She didn't stay to try to fix it. She told people about the abuse and the death threats. She moved on, remarried, had children, built a beautiful life. She did everything we tell victims to do.

And she's still dead.

In Part 3 of our three-part interview series, psychotherapist Shavaun Scott helps us reckon with that reality. Shavaun has spent over thirty years in trauma recovery and believes deeply in the possibility of healing. But she's also honest about what this case reveals.

We examine how young children process loss. We explore survivor's guilt. We ask what healing looks like for a shattered family. And we confront the devastating truth: sometimes doing everything right still isn't enough — and that says more about the system than it does about any victim.
