Retired FBI Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program Chief Robin Dreeke is one of the most experienced behavioral analysts in the country. Today he's sitting with me to examine the Nancy Guthrie abduction through the lens of behavioral science — and specifically, to answer the questions listeners have been asking about both the person responsible and the investigation tasked with finding her.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, with a fragile heart and no access to her medication, was abducted from her Tucson home. Ransom notes demanding cryptocurrency payment came in the days afterward — two deadlines passed without resolution. FBI surveillance footage shows a masked man outside her front door the night she disappeared. More than 18,000 tips have been submitted. No suspect has been named.

The investigation has been conducted inside a department in institutional crisis. Dr. Richard Carmona — a former U.S. Surgeon General and former Pima County sheriff — went on record accusing current Sheriff Nanos of corrupting the crime scene. The deputies' union passed a unanimous no-confidence vote. The Board of Supervisors invoked a rare law requiring him to answer under oath. A recall effort is underway. A deputy unrelated to this case was arrested on a kidnapping charge.

Robin is going to walk us through the behavioral profile that emerges from what we know. What does improvised behavior at the scene — a masked man, not a prepared one — tell us about the person responsible? What does his expertise say about someone who sends ransom demands with cryptocurrency deadlines and then goes silent? And what behavioral indicators are investigators looking for that a department under this kind of institutional pressure may not be equipped to recognize?

We're also going directly at a question multiple listeners have sent in: if someone out there knows something and hasn't come forward after all of this — the reward, the family's pleas, 18,000 tips — what does that silence tell us about who we're dealing with?
