When Tim moved in with his grandparents as a child, their house should have felt safe.

Instead, the upstairs bedroom quickly became the place he dreaded most at night. Part of it was the dolls.

His grandmother kept a pair of old porcelain dolls from Europe displayed on a shelf at the foot of his bed near the attic door. Even during the daytime, something about them felt wrong. But what truly unsettled him was waking up to find the dolls in completely different places than where they had been the night before.

At first, Tim tried convincing himself there had to be a normal explanation. Then the attic door started opening on its own. And after a while, it no longer felt like the dolls were simply being moved around. It felt like something in the room wanted him awake.
