Welcome to Historically St Pete. with executive director Rui Farias, executive director of the St. Petersburg Museum of Art. In this podcast airing every Monday, Rui explores the truths, and myths of the people and events that created the Sunshine City. The Museum of History has been sharing the stories of the Sunshine City for 104 years on our spot on The Pier, and now on Radio St. Pete! During his tenure at the Museum, and even before when he worked on City projects like First Night, the Festival of States and the Centennial celebration of the Tony Jannus flight, he  was fortunate to work with some amazing people who cared deeply about St Petersburg. Today’s guest easily falls into that category: St. Petersburg's City Councilmember Corey Givens, Jr. .  They discuss his journey and current role, and an exciting project they are collaborating on.  Says Rui:  "So the Councilmember and I got together some time ago and started discussing how so much of the City’s African American history is disappearing right before our eyes.  One conversation led to another that led to another, and we started to formulate a plan.  We want to capture this history, not just African American history, but stories of the people of St. Pete and archive it forever – all while using it to create exhibits to educate and entertain the public on the real histories of St. Pete! The two stories we are starting this project with are the forgotten churches of the Gas Plant area, and When Schools Were Segregated."
