Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup journey is OVER. Spain knocked Portugal out of the 2026 World Cup 1-0 in the Round of 16 — Ronaldo's final World Cup match, and a flat, toothless Portugal exit. Plus: the USA are thrashed 4-1 by Belgium as the last co-host falls. Full breakdown below.
In Dallas, a cagey Portugal-Spain tie looked destined for extra time until substitute Mikel Merino struck in the 91st minute to send Spain into the quarterfinals and end Ronaldo's time on football's biggest stage — the 41-year-old, who confirmed this was his last World Cup, left the pitch in tears, and Roberto Martinez has since stepped down as Portugal boss. Then in Seattle, Belgium tore through the USA: Charles De Ketelaere scored twice in the first half, Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku added more, and only a Malik Tillman free kick replied in a 4-1 rout. With that, all three co-hosts — Canada, Mexico and the USA — are out, and the USMNT crash out in the Round of 16 for the fourth straight time. I break down both games, Ronaldo's legacy, and what the quarterfinals look like now.
