Siders 16 Kids: What A Teenager Never Learned To Do

There's a basic skill an eighteen-year-old in the Siders case never developed, and it's not because nobody tried — it's because her mind formed inside a sealed-off house with no school, no strangers, no world beyond four walls. Sixteen children, one Hamden, Ohio address, and a town that swears it saw nothing.

Tony and Robin trace how that silence held for years. A Dollar General employee produced a flawless account of the family the moment reporters asked — hygiene, clothing, shopping habits, all recalled in detail. Before the arrests, none of it surfaced. A neighbor a few doors down claims six years without spotting a child. DoorDash drivers who regularly encountered the oldest son noticed nothing worth reporting. The Attorney General points to deliberate record-avoidance by the family — accurate, but avoidance like that only works when the people nearby choose not to look closer.

Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott then walks through what that isolation actually did to the children inside. She takes apart the AG's description of them as "almost feral," explaining what that label leaves out. Some of the sixteen can't speak in any conventional way, and Scott describes what forms between siblings who've only ever had each other for language. None of them knew their situation was unusual — that house was simply the world, and unlearning that takes time. Scott raises the Turpin case as the clearest precedent: freedom and sympathy didn't guarantee safety for those thirteen kids either.

Two questions, one house, no easy answer for either.
