Lindsay Clancy's trial has begun in Plymouth Superior Court. She is charged with three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of her children Cora, Dawson, and Callan in January 2023. Her defense attorney does not deny she killed them. He argues postpartum psychosis made her not criminally responsible.

Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Tony Brueski to lay out the clinical spectrum the jury needs to understand. Eighty percent of new mothers experience baby blues. Roughly one in seven gets postpartum depression. One or two per thousand get postpartum psychosis. The public treats these as the same condition on a sliding scale. They are not even the same category of illness.

Lindsay was diagnosed with Bipolar I disorder after the killings — not before. Her providers had considered the possibility but never confirmed it. When antidepressants are prescribed to a patient with undiagnosed bipolar disorder, the drugs themselves can trigger mania and psychosis. The medication meant to help may have pushed her further into crisis. Her providers allegedly documented her reports of a commanding voice as intrusive thoughts — two clinically distinct experiences with very different implications for treatment and for the insanity defense.

The prosecution will argue Lindsay was coherent on January 24 — she took Cora to the pediatrician, played in the snow, ordered dinner. Shavaun explains how both of those realities can coexist in the same person on the same day.

Tony Brueski and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott discuss the Lindsay Clancy murder trial.
