Opening statements continued this week in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. She's pleaded not guilty and is mounting an insanity defense, with attorney Kevin Reddington arguing she was in the grip of severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication at the time of the killings.

Reddington took his turn at the podium and built a very different picture than the prosecution's. His Lindsay Clancy was a trained nurse, a devoted mother, a woman who saw the warning signs in herself and asked for help — and didn't get the help she needed in time. It's the defense's whole case in one image: not a woman who chose violence, but a woman failed by the system meant to catch her before she fell. Whether jurors buy that framing over the prosecution's "premeditated, not psychotic" line is going to be the entire trial.

After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out of the home running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial, underway in Plymouth Superior Court before Judge William F. Sullivan, is expected to run several weeks.
