Bryan Kohberger Says He's NOT Guilty After All

A year ago, the family of Kaylee Goncalves said Bryan Kohberger was too afraid to die but not afraid to kill. He had just traded a capital murder trial for a deal that took the death penalty off the table and locked in four consecutive life terms.

Now he says the state is welcome to come after the death penalty again.

This episode is about that reversal and what is actually behind it. Kohberger has filed to withdraw the guilty plea he entered for the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin at their off-campus house in Moscow, Idaho. He filed it himself, with no attorney on the document, after breaking thirteen months of silence with a phone call to a reporter.

We walk through the filing, the language he used, and what that language reveals about who it was really written for. We go back to the plea hearing to look at who stood beside him, how long he had been reviewing the evidence with counsel, and the sworn statement that undercuts his entire argument.

Then we get to the piece that should have led every headline. Before the deal was signed, these families were sent a letter containing a specific written promise about post-conviction filings. What that promise turned out to be worth is the real failure in this story.

The Goncalves family answered within hours and made short work of the petition, including one line about the life he is living now that lands harder than anything else said all day.

Built from the docket, the filings, and dated reporting on the University of Idaho case.
