What Happens When Science Meets the Mystery?

What if we didn't have to choose between science and spirituality?

What if a deep love of biology, mathematics, astronomy, dolphins, or the physical universe could coexist with an equally deep fascination with mystery, magic, and the experiences we cannot fully explain?

That question sits at the heart of my conversation with Julie Grimm, a scientist, painter, author, illustrator, professional guide, and healer within the modern mystery school.

A Scientist and Atheist Experiences a Spiritual Awakening

Julie wasn't searching for a mystical experience.

She wasn't a metaphysical scholar. She knew about concepts such as chakras largely through yoga, but she considered them metaphors rather than literal energetic realities.

At the time, she identified as a scientist and an atheist.

Then something happened that completely changed the lens through which she experienced the world.

Mystical Experiences Don't Always Happen When We Expect Them

One of the things I loved most about talking with Julie was hearing where some of her later mystical experiences occurred.

Not in a sacred ceremony.

Not necessarily in deep meditation.

Not always during prayer.

Sometimes, she said, these moments appeared unexpectedly.

Living at the Threshold of Mystery

Julie Grimm's story is not necessarily a story about abandoning science for spirituality.

It's a story about allowing an extraordinary experience to change the questions she was willing to ask.

She remains someone with a scientific background.

And she has also become someone deeply engaged with spiritual exploration, healing, guidance, and mystery.

She lives at the threshold.
