The mental-health testimony everyone's been waiting for showed up this week in the Lindsay Clancy trial, courtesy of psychiatrist Dr. Sejal Shah, who treated Clancy during her hospital stay. Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, is charged with three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation in the deaths of her children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 7 months — who prosecutors allege she strangled with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. She's pleaded not guilty. Her attorney, Kevin Reddington, is building an insanity defense around severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.
Shah described Clancy experiencing delirium in the hospital and testified that Clancy changed her health care proxy to her parents during that period — a procedural detail that ends up saying a lot about her state of mind at the time. Shah also gave the court a broader picture of Clancy's mental health, testimony both sides will likely revisit heavily as this trial moves forward.
After the alleged killings, Clancy is accused of attempting suicide by jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was running errands when it happened and has since relocated to Manhattan, where he's spoken publicly about his wife's mental health. The trial is underway in Plymouth Superior Court and is expected to run several weeks.
