Lindsay Clancy's Mother Knew in December — Why Didn't She Call for Help

There's a moment in every trial like this where the questions stop being about the defendant and start being about everyone around her. This week, that moment belonged to Paula Musgrove, Lindsay Clancy's mother. On the stand, Musgrove admitted Lindsay told her — and told her husband Patrick — back in early-to-mid December 2022 that she was having thoughts of harming her three children. That's roughly six weeks before three-year-old Dawson, five-year-old Cora, and seven-month-old Callan were allegedly strangled with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home in Duxbury, Massachusetts.

What Musgrove did with that information is now part of the record: nothing. No push to get Lindsay committed. No 911 call. Prosecutors introduced text messages between the two women covering Lindsay's sleep, her state of mind, her day-to-day activities — and Musgrove testified she kept her responses upbeat on purpose, choosing encouragement over confrontation because her daughter was already struggling.

Clancy, 34, faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation, and has pleaded not guilty. Attorney Kevin Reddington is mounting an insanity defense centered on severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication, and testimony establishing that Lindsay voiced these thoughts weeks in advance cuts both ways — evidence of a documented mental health crisis, or evidence she understood what she was contemplating. After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband Patrick was out running errands during the killings and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial continues in Plymouth Superior Court and is expected to run several more weeks.
