Lindsay Clancy's Story Never Changed in 200 Visits

Lindsay Clancy has told one person the same account for three years, and on Day 17 of her murder trial that person finally testified. Hospital chaplain Sheila Cavanaugh — roughly two hundred visits at Tewksbury Hospital, plus fourteen at Brigham and Women's — took the stand for about twenty minutes, and those minutes may shape the verdict more than any expert who preceded her.

Cavanaugh testified that Clancy described a persistent male voice commanding her to kill her children and then herself, and that Clancy's first words after her breathing tube came out were about her children being safe. Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague countered that Cavanaugh's notes never documented a single mention of any voice, and Cavanaugh conceded the point. The stakes of that exchange are structural: Clancy admits the acts, so the entire trial is her state of mind, and Massachusetts law requires the Commonwealth to prove her criminal responsibility beyond a reasonable doubt. The state's roughly seventy witnesses described a devoted nurse and mother. Its own phone evidence shows searches about hallucinations, psychosis, and postpartum psychosis symptoms before the killings — evidence Tony argues cuts directly against the theory that the voice was invented afterward.

Closing arguments are expected the week of August 24, and deliberations will follow soon after. This is the episode to hear before the verdict comes in.
