Lindsay Clancy Trial: Defense Exposes Gaps in Prosecution Psychologist's Résumé

Cross-examination turned into a credibility audit in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial this week. Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation in the deaths of her children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 7 months — allegedly strangled with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. She's pleaded not guilty, and defense attorney Kevin Reddington is arguing insanity: severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.

Reddington took his shot at Dr. Kirk Heilbrun, the prosecution's forensic psychologist, and didn't waste time. First point: the evaluation happened about three years after the killings — and Heilbrun himself agreed that sooner is better for assessing someone's mental state after an offense. Second point: Heilbrun's direct experience treating mothers who killed their children came from roughly 44 years ago, four or five patients total. Not exactly current caseload material.

Then Reddington opened the CV — about 70 pages of it — and read the gaps into the record. Plenty on juveniles, on prisoners reintegrating into society, on sexual abuse. Nothing on pregnancy. Nothing on postpartum depression or psychosis. Heilbrun confirmed he's coached both prosecution and defense on how to present expert testimony, but Reddington made the point that his actual career has run mostly through prosecutors and corrections. Heilbrun also testified he never met co-evaluator Avram Mack in person until they crossed paths at Tewksbury Hospital, and that his total contact with Clancy amounted to 10.5 hours spread across three days.

Afterward, Clancy allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Husband Patrick Clancy, out running errands that day, has since relocated to Manhattan.
