Lindsay Clancy Trial: Expert Says Voice Never Named a Method or Room

The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the 34-year-old Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 7 months — with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023, moved into expert psychiatric testimony this week. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation, has pleaded not guilty, and is mounting an insanity defense built around severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication, argued by attorney Kevin Reddington.

The prosecution called in serious firepower: Dr. Gregory Saathoff, a forensic psychiatrist who's worked with the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit. His testimony cut in a specific direction — he said the voice Clancy described hearing never instructed her on how or where to kill her children. That distinction matters more than it sounds like it should in an insanity case; prosecutors want jurors to see agency where the defense wants them to see command hallucinations.

Saathoff also walked the jury through what he called a sense of "burdensomeness" — Clancy believing she was a drain on her family, that returning to work wasn't realistic, that the finances didn't work with her in the picture. He called her suicide attempt "very, very serious," citing the multiple methods she tried as evidence of real intent, not a cry for help.

He diagnosed bipolar II as the best fit for her condition and confirmed she was suffering from a mental disease at the time — but then testified she understood right from wrong and was criminally responsible regardless.

Clancy survived her own suicide attempt by jumping from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Husband Patrick Clancy, out running errands during the killings, has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial continues in Plymouth Superior Court, expected to run several more weeks.
