Lindsay Clancy Trial: Defense Exposes Gaps in FBI Psychiatrist's Testimony

The Lindsay Clancy murder trial, unfolding in Plymouth Superior Court, moved into a rough patch for the prosecution today. Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, is accused of strangling her three children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 7 months — with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. She's pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation, and attorney Kevin Reddington is running an insanity defense centered on severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.
On cross-examination, Reddington went straight at the credibility of the state's expert. Dr. Gregory Saathoff, a forensic psychiatrist with FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit ties, had testified Clancy understood right from wrong and was criminally responsible despite a bipolar II diagnosis. Under questioning, he acknowledged he wasn't retained until January or February of 2026, more than three years after the killings, and said he had no idea what his university employer was paid for his time on the case. Reddington also got him to acknowledge a pattern: his expert testimony history runs almost entirely for prosecutors, prisons, and universities — not for defendants.
The most uncomfortable stretch came over homicidal ideation. Saathoff confirmed Clancy had told her husband and mother about it directly. But asked whether she'd raised dark, intrusive thoughts of suicide and homicidal ideation with doctors and others more broadly, he wouldn't agree that the homicidal ideation part reached that far — even while admitting she repeatedly sought help and told doctors about dark and suicidal thoughts. Nobody, it turns out, ever asked her the one question that might matter most: were these just thoughts, or voices.
Clancy is paralyzed from the waist down after her own alleged suicide attempt. Husband Patrick Clancy, absent from the home that day, now lives in Manhattan. The trial continues.
