The Doll That Wouldn’t Let Go | After Midnight

The doll came from a box of secondhand toys at an estate sale, and Sophie loved it immediately.

At first, the strange things were easy enough to explain. The doll talked in the middle of the night, but it still had old batteries inside. Then her parents removed them.

The voice continued.

Soon Sophie began describing conversations with the doll that no one else could hear. She talked about another house, another little girl, and a doll that was terrified of being left alone. As the weeks passed, Sophie became more withdrawn and increasingly afraid to be separated from it.

Then her parents removed not just the batteries, but the entire voice mechanism. And the doll kept talking. By then, they were no longer wondering whether Lucy was broken.

They were wondering what was speaking through her.
