"Treetops" - Chilling Tales for Dark Nights

For decades, children have vanished from the isolated town of Dorton Bluffs with terrifying regularity. The disappearances come in clusters near the beginning of spring and fall, and not one of the missing has ever been found alive. FBI investigator Felix Freeman believes the pattern belongs to an uncaught serial killer—and he arrives certain that he already knows the kind of man he is hunting. But the residents of Dorton Bluffs insist there is no killer. The children simply ran away, they claim, just as unhappy children have always done. Then Felix hears a playground rhyme about something called Treetops. As rehearsed explanations give way to warnings of offerings and a presence hidden in the northern forest, Felix discovers that some communities do more than keep secrets. They feed them.
