What Donna Adelson Said at Sentencing That Stunned the Courtroom

Donna Adelson was on the jet bridge at Miami International Airport with a one-way ticket to Vietnam when officers arrested her — one week after her son Charlie's conviction for the murder of Dan Markel. Vietnam has no extradition treaty with the United States. Bodycam footage captured Donna telling officers she didn't know there was a warrant. She was 73 years old.Prosecutors called her the engine behind the Adelson family's conspiracy — the woman who pushed hardest for the custody relocation, who signed 44 paychecks to the go-between, who allegedly scheduled her daughter's alibi for the morning of the murder, and who called Charlie three times instead of the police when the FBI bumped her with the killers' names. Two jailhouse informants testified that Donna confessed and then tried to buy false testimony — writing a question-and-answer script in her own handwriting for another inmate to perform under oath. A state handwriting expert confirmed the writing was Donna's.The jury took three hours — the same three hours Charlie's jury took. At sentencing, Donna told the court she'd never had a parking ticket. She asked the judge where the evidence was. She suggested the jury was asleep. Judge Everett interrupted her multiple times and cited her "utter lack of remorse." Life without parole.
