Caleb Flynn Trial Day 2: Ryszek and Casto Found WHAT in Forensics?!

Day 2 of the Caleb Flynn trial moved deeper into the physical evidence with Ohio BCI crime scene technician Holly Ryszek and forensic pathologist Dr. Bryan Casto. Ryszek focused on what investigators tested inside the home. Casto explained what he documented during Ashley Flynn's autopsy. 

Ryszek testified that swabs from the sink drain and shower drain in the master suite did not test positive for blood. She also swabbed suspected blood from light switches and testified that the material was blood. Ryszek said she collected DNA swabs from numerous locations in the bedroom and master bathroom, plus Caleb Flynn's truck. 

The garage remained part of the prosecution's staging theory. Ryszek testified that the garage door appeared inconsistent with forced entry. Prosecutors allege Caleb staged the home to resemble a burglary. The defense maintains Ashley was killed during a home invasion and says investigators rushed to focus on Caleb. 

Casto, who conducted Ashley's autopsy, testified that she had two gunshot wounds to the head positioned very close together. Toxicology showed Prozac in Ashley's system and an elevated level of melatonin. Casto said the melatonin finding indicated she had taken melatonin at some point. 

Cross-examination established limits on what the autopsy could show. Casto testified that the two bullet tracks overlapped, but the firing range was indeterminate. His examination therefore did not establish a specific distance between the firearm and Ashley when the shots were fired. 

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to charges in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn. Jurors now have another set of forensic findings to weigh: drains without detected blood, blood on light switches, multiple DNA collection points, Ryszek's opinion about the garage entry, and two closely placed wounds with no determined firing range.
