Caleb Flynn Trial Day 7: Analyst Counts 141 Messages About Killing Ashley

More than 107,000 messages between Caleb Flynn and Alleigha Botner became a spreadsheet, a timeline, and ultimately a series of numbers the prosecution wants jurors to remember.

Ohio BCI criminal intelligence analyst Samantha Reeb testified that she helped preserve digital data, analyze information returned through search warrants, and build a timeline of communications in the investigation into the death of Ashley Flynn.

Reeb testified that an Instagram account using the false name “Derrick Hammond” was created by Caleb Flynn’s phone and used to monitor and message Botner.

Then she broke down the communications by subject matter.

According to Reeb’s analysis, 141 messages referenced Caleb wanting to kill Ashley, while another 95 referenced hating her. She identified 188 messages involving discussion about deleting digital data. The overall volume of communication dropped dramatically in January before Flynn and Botner resumed talking on February 14.

Reeb testified there were 266 communications from February 14 into February 15. From roughly 4 p.m. February 15 through February 16, she counted 716 communications.

She also testified that GroupMe was deleted from Flynn’s phone at approximately 1 a.m. February 16, with Instagram deleted around the same time.

Flynn has pleaded not guilty to charges in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn. Prosecutors allege he killed Ashley and staged the scene as a home invasion. His defense maintains an intruder killed her and investigators wrongly focused on Caleb.

The prosecution has spent days showing jurors individual messages. Reeb’s testimony attempts to show them the scale and timing of the digital record surrounding those messages.
