Christa Pike's Own Lawsuit Predicted THIS Would Happen

Christa Pike filed suit against Tennessee in January over the way the state planned to kill her. The filing named a blood condition, thrombocytosis, and small veins that would make establishing an IV line difficult, and it asked for a thinner butterfly needle handled by trained medical staff. Tennessee called her veins reliably accessible and said the risk she described did not come close to the legal standard.
The execution went ahead on September 30 at Riverbend. Two doses of pentobarbital went in. Pike was carried out alive and taken to a hospital with significant injuries to both arms.
Her attorneys allege the IV lines failed and the drug leaked into the tissue around them. The Tennessee Department of Correction says its people followed every step of a protocol approved by the attorney general's office. On October 7, Pike's lawyers went back to Chancery Court and asked Judge I'Ashea Myles to freeze everything from that room before it disappears, telling her they do not know what records the state is holding. She granted it and reopened the case from the bench.
Defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis sits down with Tony Brueski on the first moves a lawyer makes for a client who survived her own execution, and whether a state that already tried once can be stopped from trying again.
